St. Joseph's Aid Society: Serving Orphaned and Neglected Children Since 1966
Founded by Rev. Fr. Rochus David Kasole in 1966, St. Joseph's Aid Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality education to orphaned and neglected children in Uganda. For over five decades, we have remained committed to our founder's vision of serving those most in need.
The Life of Our Founder:
Fr. Rochus David Kasole
1
Early Life (1941-1949)
Born on April 6, 1941, to John Mary and Bernadette Matovu, Rochus was the first of 12 children. During his teen years, he spent holidays with his grandmother Catalina, who instilled in him a deep faith and virtuous character that shaped his future service.
2
Education (1949-1962)
Kasole began his education at Katente Primary School, later attending St. Edward's Junior Secondary School. In 1957, with help from Pere Richard Cays, he joined Kisubi Seminary. After excelling in his studies, he entered Katigondo Major Seminary in 1962.
3
Priesthood (1968-2007)
Ordained on December 8, 1968, Fr. Kasole served in various parishes including Nsambya and Lubaga. Throughout his priestly service, he remained dedicated to helping children in need, eventually establishing St. Joseph's Aid Society.
The Birth of St. Joseph's Aid Society
1
Early Beginnings
In 1971, while Fr. Kasole studied in France, Sr. Richard Nayiga joined his mission of caring for children. By 1987, the number of children had grown significantly, prompting their relocation to Kigando, Fr. Kasole's parents' home.
2
Growth and Development
As the number of students increased in 1990, Fr. Kasole conceived the idea of establishing a school to address the growing needs of his children. He acquired land in Kigando for this purpose.
3
Official Establishment
In 1991, the community officially became St. Joseph's Aid Society, a Roman Catholic foundation with the mission of providing education to needy children. Fr. Kasole and Sr. Richard Nayiga sought assistance from various benefactors.
Fr. Kasole's Final Years
Sudden Illness
On June 13, 2004, during a community event at Kigando, Fr. Kasole collapsed. For months afterward, he was unable to speak, only occasionally uttering "Kigando, Kigando, Kigando."
Return to Kigando
When brought back to visit Kigando, his children were present with mixed emotions. Unable to recognize them, he tried to speak but could only mumble, bringing tears to everyone's eyes.
Challenges and Providence
The society faced numerous difficulties during this time, including financial struggles to pay workers and feed the children. God's providence brought benefactors who helped cover the financial gaps.
Final Days and Legacy
Despite experiencing great pain in his final days, Fr. Kasole tried not to burden others. He returned to the Lord on August 30, 2007, and was laid to rest at Kiyinda Miyana Cathedral on August 31, 2007.
